Costuma se manifestar em meio a queimadas e incêndios, seja para provocá-los, seja para extingui-los. Dentre as variações, costumam acontecer olhos enormes flamejantes, que proporcionam a/o hospedeira/o visão completa mesmo em escuridão absoluta. Em geral, esses espíritos preferem propor elos com pessoas de temperamento agressivo e impetuoso. Esse espírito é associado ao elemento fogo justamente em virtude de seu temperamento e habitat. Onde há fumaça, há fogo, e onde há fogo, há boitatá. Pessoas que percebem o sobrenatural devem prevenir-se protegendo primeiro os olhos, para não ficarem ofuscadas. Sendo espíritos ligados ao fogo, são muito destrutivos e, por isso mesmo, são muito raros. Costumam se manifestar tanto durante intervenções humanas abusivas quanto em incêndios que acontecem naturalmente em determinados ambientes, como os cerrados. Alguns também estão associados à punição aos responsáveis por incêndios como as queimadas ilegais. Este espírito foi associado ao elemento terra por habitar matas e florestas e ter capacidade de imitar e controlar animais. Esta forma varia muito de acordo com a bagagem cultural e o perfil do hospedeiro. Este espírito foi associado ao elemento ar por conta de suas características de malícia, leveza e traquinagem, e pelo fato de aparecer dentro de um pé de vento ou redemoinho, vento em espiral formado pela convecção do ar, em dias quentes, sem ventos e de muito sol, que pode apresentar desde alguns centímetros até muitos metros de altura mas raramente ultrapassando os 100 km/h, podendo causar apenas pequenos estragos, tais como destelhamentos leves. Segundo artigo na Wikipédia em português, antigamente, ao se avistar esse fenômeno, as pessoas acreditavam que seria o rastro do caminhar do Saci-pererê vagando pelos campos. Havia até uma crença de que se alguém entrasse no meio do redemoinho com uma garrafa e uma peneira conseguiria prender o Saci. Na verdade o que acontecia é que ao entrar no meio do redemoinho, a pessoa pode interromper a corrente de convecção que alimenta o sistema, e o redemoinho simplesmente "desaparece". Uiaras fêmeas, conhecidas como Iaras, costuma assumir sempre a forma mista; já as uiaras machos, conhecidas como Botos, raramente assumem esta forma, preferindo apresentar-se como um homem com um chapéu que esconde um furo no topo da acbeça, ou como botos com olhos humanos. Essas formas variam muito de acordo com o perfil do/a hospedeiro/a. Quanto mais agressivo for o perfil, mais monstruosa será sua forma, podendo, em casos extremos, se parecer com as antigas Ipupiaras descritas por colonizadores. Esses espíritos são ligados ao elemento água pela óbvia razão de só se manifestarem em ambientes aquáticos. Em geral, as uiaras tendem para uma abordagem sedutora e persuasiva quando estão em terra. Em seus habitats aquáticos, no entanto, é bom precaver-se, pois podem rapidamente mudar de humor.
